The on-site skilled nursing facility is a convenient way for residents to access a variety of medical services. Residents will need to find ways to entertain themselves at times.

Lifestyle

Not enough planned activity and out of date common areas leave the community feeling less than appealing.

My first impression of Care One at the Cupola was of a big community with too much space. While having an open floor plan can be nice, here it is not well utilized and has a rather empty feeling. The décor is sparse and the furniture is not very comfortable looking. In general, I thought the common areas needed updating. Outdoor space is limited, but flower pots and bushes give it a cheerful feel. There are a couple of nice spots to sit and enjoy the weather.

The activity calendar is also rather empty. Every morning starts with some type of social gathering and exercise, followed by a game or club meeting before lunch. After lunch there are usually a couple of activities and a happy hour, followed by a movie in the evening. Much of the calendar is the same every day and every week. The community is located a little ways down the road from a large shopping area and the neighborhood has museums, theaters, parks, and restaurants for off-site entertainment. Group transportation is planned to take advantage of some of these activities during the week.

Amenities

Many extra amenities are available, but most come with charges.

The monthly fee is higher than average for the area. Additionally, there are not very many included amenities. Residents do have daily housekeeping, weekly linen service, and all meals built-in. Fruit and beverages are provided during the day and residents have refrigerators and microwaves for keeping personal favorites on hand. Apartments do not have stoves, and counter space is very limited, so cooking anything beyond a snack is not an option. Residents may also bring their small pets along without an extra charge.

There is not a concierge, but a long list of extra services is available for a fee. I like that residents can purchase a little extra help, but I don't like that so few amenities are included in the already high monthly fee. There are two lists of additional services available. One is options that are included in levels of care, but could be purchased separately. The other is a long menu that anyone could purchase from. Some items on this list are: room service for healthy residents, transportation for personal trips, and participation in the exercise program. The guest dining fees are also high; the cost may discourage visitors from joining residents for a meal.

Health Services

Medical care is easily accessible and extra support is available for a fee.

With a skilled nursing facility on site, residents have easy access to medical care and physical therapy. The care staff I saw were all happy and attentive to residents' needs. The ratio of staff to residents is rather low; there are four aides, an LPN and two RNs to support 145 assisted living residents in their daily activities. Some of the people I saw were dressed in robes and probably would have benefited from more attention.

Some residents may want to take advantage of the list of additional services that are available. These are ways to get a little extra support without having to pay for another full level of care each month. The services do come with extra charges, but it is a nice option. Residents need to be aware of how many services they are using and whether adjusting the level of care would be more appropriate.
