How does Silver Living work?

Silver Living was founded with the vision of making it easier to locate and research senior living communities. We make it easier for families to find the right senior living community for their loved one by doing the research for them. Our in-depth research synthesizes information from many sources: residents, families, state inspection reports, and multiple visits we make to each community. We help you narrow down dozens of senior living communities to just a handful that make the most sense for your exact situation and budget. Research is just the first step, so once you have your short list, we make it easy to book a tour at those communities.

How is this free?

We have partnerships with community owners to introduce them to qualified prospective residents. We are paid by some of these communities when a prospective resident chooses one as their new home. No community has editorial control over our reviews, or even which photos we post. We are not a referral agency and have no influence over which community families investigate, just the cold hard facts in our research.

Do you research every senior living community?

No. We select and research only the best communities run by reputable operators. We do not research "mom & pop" facilities with five beds and a living room. While some of these facilities provide excellent care, our communities must meet minimum service levels and amenities to be included in our published research. If you know of a place that we should include, let us know.

How do you standardize amenities?

Our team visits each community multiple times prior to publishing our research. Since we research locations individually, we're able to standardize amenities between them, and allow you to search for exactly what you need.

How do your Silver Ratings work?

The Silver Rating gives you a quick snapshot of each community and allows you to quickly compare between similar locations. Read more about what influences the Silver Rating.

What type of communities do you research?

Our research is focused on Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care centers.

What is Independent Living?

Independent Living is focused on seniors who do not require specialized medical care. As the name implies, residents are typically independent and vibrant community members. Independent living typically provides maintenance-free retirement living by providing organized activities, housekeeping, communal meals, and local transportation. Most Independent Living communities allow third-party providers to assist residents with activities of daily living and medical needs on site, so they can stay in place as long as possible.

In the Independent Living philosophy, disabled people are primarily seen as citizens and only secondarily as consumers of healthcare, rehabilitation, or social services.

What is Assisted Living?

Assisted Living communities provide apartment living and care for residents that require assistance with activities of daily living. These communities provide a semi-independent lifestyle while catering to the care levels of each resident. Assisted Living communities might be a good option for residents with mobility limitations, incontinence, and memory impairments. Residents in Assisted Living do not require as much care as a skilled nursing facility, or nursing home.

What are Activities of Daily Living?

Activities of daily living include bathing, grooming, self-feeding, dressing and other forms of personal care.

What is a Memory Care center?

Memory Care centers strive to provide a safe, familiar, and stimulating environment for residents with memory impairment, including Alzheimer's. While most Memory Care centers are part of Assisted Living communities, they typically have their own amenities, such as dedicated dining rooms and enclosed gardens.
